design intern

Department: Creative

Reports to: Creative Director

Status: Non-Exempt

THE AGENCY:

If you’re ready for the most invigorating ascent of a lifetime, Spawn Ideas is right for you. Our home base is in Anchorage, AK, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Chugach mountains.

Spawn is a fully integrated advertising agency that’s independent and employee owned, which means our team of employees all have “skin in the game.” There are no sideliners here, just a bold and resourceful team with enough courage to summit any challenge for our clients.

Up here, we’re perpetual adventurers who pursue the outdoors and bring a fresh perspective to our creative work. We live by the mantra “when the agency succeeds, we succeed.” Our ownership and determination to push further has led us to success for our clients and a series of accolades we’re quite proud of.

We’re recognized as an agency that punches above its weight. In 2017 and 2018, we are Ad Age Small Agency of the Year winners – as a standout northwest agency and for great culture. And we’ve been named one of Outside Magazine’s 100 Best Places to Work in America (nine years running). In 2015, Inc. Magazine named us among the Fastest Growing Companies in America and we were called one of the nation’s 75 Best Places to Work for Millennials too.

We give you the tools, direction and encouragement. You climb the mountain!

THE CULTURE:

Our success comes from our people, our culture, the way we care about work and our clients’ business outcomes. We are bold and resourceful – perpetual adventurers at work and play and are energized by our work – for the fun of it and the challenge it brings. Careers and friendships blossom here.

Living in Alaska (especially in the summer) is also an adventure in and of itself. We embrace the outdoor culture, and have plenty of company wide fitness, hiking, camping, mountain climbing and social opportunities for everyone. There’s plenty to do, both in the office and outside.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Spawn Ideas is not your average creative internship. We’re not going to make you do a coffee run, though one of us may ask if you’d like to join us for a coastal run. Here, you’ll get real projects, not just busy work, and you’ll be working right alongside the rest of the creative team. You won’t be asked to organize supplies, instead you’ll be asked for design solutions, creative concepts and that big idea. We want you to leave this internship with a couple of pieces for your portfolio that make you proud. (That is, of course, if you ever leave. A good portion of our office started here as interns.)

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES

Our creative interns are expected to perform at the same level as entry-level employees. Now, don’t worry. We don’t expect you to have agency experience or have all the answers, but we want you to be InDesign-savvy and ready to crank out some great work. And most of all, what you don’t know, we want you to be hungry to learn.

Your time at Spawn will involve:

  • Working with the rest of the creative team on anything from digital ads to printed collateral pieces.
  • Getting jobs done on time with a keen eye for details.
  • Training with all departments to learn firsthand how the industry works.
  • Pitching in whenever needed – whether that means helping organize our server or helping our social committee plan the next Spawn event.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

You should be a friend to all, whether you’re dealing with your creative director, account executive, other interns, or the FedEx guy. You absolutely must be a team player, cooperative and fun to work with. It is crucial that you are organized, able to meet deadlines, a visual thinker and a multitasker. Knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator are a must.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Design degree required or currently pursuing a college degree in design.

WHAT SPAWN CAN OFFER:

  • An exciting summer project to work on along with your regular responsibilities
